COUNTESS COLETTE FINISHES THE SEASON WITH A SOLID STAKES-PLACED PERFORMANCE

Keeping her season-long on-the-board record intact, HMDC’s Countess Colette put in a rousing effort to finish a clear second in Thursday’s $75,000 BobbyBricker Memorial at Mahoning Valley. Throughout her seven career races, she has consistently displayed a finishing style that indicated future two-turn success. “We always wanted to run her a route and she didn’t get the chance until her race before the stake,” spoke trainer Megan Fadlovich. In that race, going a mile for the first time, the 3-year-old filly drew off by 3 1⁄2lengths.

Countess Colette – two turns is the ticket! In the 1 mile 70-yard Bricker, Countess Colette had to break from the rail over a rain-soaked surface. Facing her among the 10-horse field were last year’s 1-2 finishers Mobil Chic and Near Perfect. Jockey David Haldar got away clean from the gate and settled into the pocket along the rail. In a Houdini-like move, Haldar got her from being trapped inside to a clear path on the outside as they entered the final turn. Colette responded more than willingly excelling around the bend, propelling herself to catch the even-money favorite pacesetter into the lane. That impressive burst of energy may have taken its toll as she couldn’t hold off the late running Lucky Penny Rose, while fighting hard to keep the second spot over last year’s winner, Mobil Chic. Putting the effort in perspective Megan said, “She did everything I asked and gave everything she had and I thought it was a really good race.” Half of the stakes field were bred by HMDC partner Mapleton Farm! Countess Colette is a filly by Medal Count out of Mobil Bonnet by Mobil. Her 3-year-old season stands at 7-2-4-1 for earnings of $78,940.

ROLL ON BIG O KEEPS SITTING ON A WIN

If you were hoping for a fresh box of stogies under the Christmas tree from Roll On Big O – you’ll have to wait for next year. For the third straight race he was “close, but no cigar.” In all three, he looked entered in a perfect spot, sitting on a win, attended to the pace perfectly and then... another horse would have his best day of the season. “He gives his all every time,” said Fadlovich, who still sports an impressive 28% win tally for the season. “Eventually, those will turn into a win.” Keep Rollin’ Big O!

EIGHT-LEGGED HORSE WINS AT MAHONING VALLEY...or so it appears.

Now you see her, now you don’t! Photo by Robert Yosay/Conrad photography.

Thirty minutes after running second aboard Countess Colette in the Bobby Bricker Stakes, HMDC’s regular rider David Haldar came back to win a thrilling, yet deceptive, photo finish. Talk about eating up the competition. Two stablemates hit the wire in unison in the $75,000 Josh Radosevich Memorial at Mahoning Valley on Thursday. Charging from last to first, the 62-1 shot Copper Colonel, caught heavily favored stablemate Parlay by a nose in the final stride. Track photographer Robert K. Yosay had a hard time believing his eyes when he saw the final image where an illusion made it appear that there was only one horse, with multiple legs, at the finish. After being bumped from both sides at the start, Copper Colonel was shuffled to last in the 12-horse field. Jockey David Haldar calmly opted for a trouble-free path over the sloppy track and rallied five-wide for his scintillating win... “Believe it or not.”
